I'd love your thoughts......

Some time ago Helen put out a call for stitchers to participate in a lovely quilt project..... lots of people recieved predrawn blocks and thread to make up the stitcheries....

The blocks need to be sewn into a quilt so I have been receiving lots of lovely parcels in the post....
have a look:

They are beautifully stitched using Helen's special Hugs n Kisses hand dyed thread.

I have several ideas on putting these together..... whilst wanting to do something pretty special I also would like to make the stitcheries the focal points in the quilt.....

Most of the stitcheries arrived with red fabrics to be used to finish the quilt:

A) a disappearing 9 patch.....
You need to pretend these blues are a range of dark and medium reds.....
with the stitcheries I have received plus some sashing around the edge
approx - 40" x 57"

or
B) add some pinwheels
and get a bigger quilt 57" square

or

C)  with a few more pinwheels in there
maybe 57" x 75"

OR
D) blocks
(there would be a wider range of reds used)
please use your imagination to correct the double up in the centre
this would make up to be a 45" square (including a sashing edge)

borders are also great
alternating dark with medium reds
to make a 50" square quilt

E) single borders

or
F) double borders

I would really love your thoughts on this..... I am nervous about working with other peoples beautiful stitcheries..... personally I think any of these would work but I'd love to hear your honest opinions....

THANKS

Good Luck.

Too many choices.....I love the pinwheels!!

Yep I agree with Maree I like E the best.

I like the first three but the fabrics do dominate the stitcheries. I think that I would go for the double borders, giving the quilt top some depth and additional interest.

I like the double borders as the pinwheels distract from the stitcheries. They are beautiful and I know you will do a great job with putting them together.
Your luggage tags are on my bags and I leave for Australia shortly. The bright orange will help me find my bags on the carousel. Thanks again!

I agree with the others. I think the first few and especially the pinwheels really grab the attention away from the stitchery. I like D and E best for highlighting the lovely handstitching.

Well, I am always the 'different' one and I have to disagree with the rest. I like the first one because I don't like things to look a bit more complex than just bordering them. I like it best when a quilt looks like a quilt.

I like option E the best. The single borders can add a touch of interest with out distracting from the blocks. Lovey stitched blocks the sunflower is very pretty.

I am a new quilter so not that experienced but my favourites are the last two with the borders on.

Hey Fiona! I'm back from the "land of the lost"! LOL! Those stitcheries are amazing...really love that platypus! I think any of those designs would work, but I think I like the double borders best. With the right fabrics placed just in the right position, those blocks could really pop. I'm sure that whichever way you decide to go, it's going to look wonderful!

XOXO,

Cyndi

Double borders definitely! Look forward to seeing what you decide though!

Have to say I like the single borders, option E - that setting features the stitcheries best and lets them shine more, I think.

I think my favourites are the pinwheels and the double borders.
Have fun deciding.

T really like option one with the disappearing nine patch....looks unique, and a little more inspiring than double borders...everyone does that...

I like A the best. Done in reds of course. It adds a little pizzazz.

Hi Fiona, I love the second option with the pinwheels.

Have you thought of doing a nine patch with red and white/cream (whatever color the background is for the stitcheries)? I saw an embroidered quilt like that recently - it was redwork and it was stunning! It was like an Irish Chain with the stitcheries in the middle - easy but sure didn't look easy until I realized what she'd done! I can send you a picture if you'll e-mail me. I also have a picture of another one that has sashing but the sashing has diamonds sort of...beautiful! blessings, marlene

I really like disappearing 9 patch but I like the single border too.

I like B but it is probably because of the contrasting fabric. I think no matter what you choose, the stitcheries are so good that they will stand out.

I like E because I think in this way the stitcheries are framed and therefore highlighted without the fabric dominating. Happy stitching and can't wait to see the finished quilt.

D and E look good. Perhaps a single border looks best. Once the border defines the stitchery you could add some pinwheels in between. I love pinwheels :) Makes me laugh that everyone like something different. I guess you will just have to follow your instinct.

Hm - I like E or F. I agree that you want to highlight the stitcheries but not overwhelm them, as you want them to be the main focus of the quilt. They really are gorgeous!

The stichery blocks are so wonderful. I like E the best.

I loved the first one, but I also like the double red borders, both would be wonderful. I like the blue for the contrast.

A, B or C just to be different.
The other options are a bit too 'square' .

Wow, so many choices. I agree with some other comments that the first two seem too busy. I really like the simplicity of D and E. Think the hand stitched blocks show up better and don't compete with the fabric blocks. Will be anxious to see what you decide. Nola

I am for the double borders too... to me I could see them the best this way.... lovely little blocks

Nicky said...

My favourite of these is the single border setting, looks classy and lets the stitcheries 'pop'.

Oh wow, too many choices! I have to say I like the first one :) Just a bit different and not too busy. The stitcheries still pop out, in my opinion.
Are we helping you or confusing you more?! Lol!

I like the second choice with the pinwheels....

I love D and E, but F is good also. Just think if you do F you will need a plain border only around the whole quilt but D and E would deserve a pieced border - which is lots more work!
Happy quilting Sue SA.
