Orange Peel Quilting

This week we have the first FNSI hosted by Wendy (thanks  x)

sign up's are HERE.... I'll be doing some hand stitching

I chose to do 'Orange Peel' on my Scrappy Trip quilt.....

It is a reasonably easy one on a domestic sewing machine (personally I find the 2" finished squares a nice easy one to do as my hands can easily manoever the fabric)

I like the secondary patterns you get.. circles and 4 petal flowers as well as the cathedral window look in the individual squares...

this is the backing ... little mistakes going over the lines don't show at the end of the day (well unless of course you are quilt police looking for them)

Now of course not everyone wants to do free motion quilting and I have done this same shape with a walking foot... but to avoid moving the fabric around I would do a different flow to FMQ.

A gentle snakey line between the corners.... and it doesn't mean a lot of moving the quilt round corners

you do need to turn the fabric at the end for this one... then snakey line on the other side..

keep going... you can sew on the edges or cut threads on the edges ... either is going to be hidden by the binding..

you then turn the quilt 90 degrees and go the other way... still a snakey line

... and again....

(I started quilting with a small machine with a small throat space.... it can be done though a huge quilt would be tough on the shoulders!)

... this is worth trying on a small project first... but it's a great one for when you have squares
(when I do big squares I mark as it is not so easy to keep nice curves and they are more noticeable when you go wrong)

It's been very hot so I have been doing a bit each morning before I cannot bear a quilt over me

All done today and here it is... the binding is made... but I will be leaving that to sew when it cools down...

I soaked my stitchery that had bled... the first bleed did get lighter... but of course there were bleeds elsewhere...

I finished the stitchery anyway and soaked it in some black tea....

... it's fine now....
just need to make it up into something useful

Righto, Gotto Go.... I am going to trim those edges of the quilt before putting it aside...

Thanks for showing us how to do the orange peel quilting, Fiona. Glad the little stitchery has turned out fine now. You wouldn't even know the colour had run.

Fiona, thanks for the reminder re FNSI and I love your orange peel quilting. And you were clever fixing up the redwork stitchery - looks fab now.

So black tea is the key for bleeds? I noticed a stitchery I went to use yesterday had bled. I stitched it a long time ago so now am worried about all my other projects I have done with these threads. Fortunately this one is now for me but need to take heed for the future. Love yr scrappy trip a long.

Thank you for the quilting lesson, that is a great pattern and its interesting to know its easier to do on the little squares. I do so love my walking foot, but getting more adventurous with the FMQ, thank you again!

I do love orange peels, it's my favourite block design and it looks fantastic quilted. Very easy instructions too. Great save on your stitchery, it's such a shock when the thread runs.

You are inspiring me to go and machine quilt something with an orange peel pattern. It always looks easy when a pro does it but I think I could manage that one. Thanks for the mini tutorial. I am glad your little stitchery came out fine and you can use it somewhere.

I haven't tried the orange peel FMQ pattern before, but that's mainly because I haven't really had an item that it would work well on. Feathers, in-the-ditch, meanders have pretty much been my go-to patterns :) Have you seen that Angela Walters has a new FMQing class up on the Craftsy platform that has just come out?!! She's put up a link on her blog whereby you can follow it and get 50% off all her classes atm!! I'm thinking of getting the new one - as far as I can gather, she goes through the different types of quilts and talks about the different styles of quilting patterns/techniques you can use in each one - ie. appliqué based quilts vs traditional pieced quilts and so on. Looks really interesting! ... Your little stitchery came up looking really good after the soak!! Good on you for thinking out of the box and trying to dye it - I would probably just have thrown it, lol! Can I ask if you kept the thread after that mishap? :)

Looks great Fiona, and a great save on the stitched piece. I've washed the red quilt, and the colour has run in that quite a bit. It hasn't affected the quilt, used colour catchers, but I'll be sending one with it for the next time they wash it

The orange peel quilting is so effective... have to say I haven't done it much - I should one day. I have a template that I can use on my big machine... need to see if I can get the hang of it or just free motion.... xxx

Fiona the quilting is very clever! And the quilt will look wonderful when you've bound it - reminds me that I need to bind Jewel-y Trip

Gorgeous quilt and that quilting is so simple but effective. Metapex (don't know what you Aussies might call it) is great for removing excess dye. xx

That was a nice save with the stitchery. You'd never know there had been a problem. Now youve got me thinking about orange peel for my hexagons...I wonder if that would work as nicely as squares? You doing it of course!

Dear Fiona,
the orange peel quilting looks great, good that you reminded us that it exists, almost forgot about it.
Practical idea with the tea dye, can't see a spot any more. Have fun Friday.
Greetings,
Sylvia

Great work on the quilting. Orange peel is perfect for it and a lot easier to deal with on a big quilt.
Well done on the stitchery rescue. No signs of any problems now.

Oh such a great run through on the Orange Peel! Thanks so much Fiona :) This is one design that I have always found interesting, same reasons as you give. If I can keep it in my head, I may have a little project I'm thinking of making that it will work on, this post is sure to help then :) Such a brilliant rescue on the stitchery, it looks great dyed :)
