Starting a special quilt.......

Whilst I was in UK I was given a very special bundle of fabric to make up into a quilt

These are shirts from my nephew who passed away in August....
... he was a really lovable young man so it is quite an honour to be putting something together ...

because there is no pattern and the fabrics are different and don't necessarily match it is a bit different to making a regular quilt so I thought I would share the process
and also show what I have done so far

there is T shirt, flannel, fleecy, denim and cotton

...... so I have been slicing off collars and cuffs and seams....
(I did need a few tissues when I was doing it)

.... ironing on lightweight interfacing to stabilise the stretchy T shirt fabric....

..... cutting it into workable blocks....
(don't you love the paint splashes on this one?)

..... placing them up on my 'design wall' to get an idea of size and placement ....

.... checking it out through my peeper....

.... I have included pockets, flannel and parts of a favourite bandana....

.... applique some pockets on the pieces...

... I am making this quilt in strips... then will join them together ...
... my overlocker is being used for joining the blocks.... it does make it easier and neater with the stretchy fabric .....

... this is one strip done...

The family are visiting us in January/February and I am wanting to have this finished by the time they come

..... will not take long to sew the strips together and then I will work on a pieced back.....

Righto, Gotta Go.... I need those tissues again  ....

Love it Fiona! This is a brilliant idea and is coming together so beautifully. You will need to make sure there is a huge box of tissues on hand when you hand the quilt over :)

What a wonderful idea, such a memory to have....not as good, of course, as having the young man though. Perhaps a box of tissues wrapped in the quilt when it's handed over?
