I started playing at Chookyblue's weekend party on Friday....
(I do like to be early!)
Our Saturday road trip was cancelled due to weather predections of a severe system coming through... Parts of Brisbane are having heaps of rain but over her it's a bit of a non event!
But it is damp and cold enough to HAVE to stay indoors and sew!
I wanted to get more sashing done on Sylvia's Sampler blocks - I think I got through about 40 of them and got them trimmed back... they are not sewn together but looking promising...
Before
After - all that wall on the left is still to fill - about another 34 blocks to be sashed
I am linked to an OMG (Organic, Modern, Graphic) group on Facebook run by Helen Godden who does a lot of art quilting. I am trying to do her challenge each month to stretch my imagination and work on shape and colour. Helen posts up a picture and we make our own quilted piece with it as inspiration.... Just very hard for me but I am having fun so will keep up with it...
This is quilting the one for April...
It is a small piece - 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" and I had it all ready for binding. I haven't invested in the special binding clips one sees - these $2 ones from the cheap store are way cuter I think!!
The smaller pieces with tiny quilting take a while and I find I bend and the small movement tires my shoulders.... so I need regular breaks. I borrowed these books from our local library ... fun to look through though the patchwork prisoners is a lot of information as opposed stories of the women involved. Interesting but a bit academic for me!
Here is my finished work.... not sure I really like it but I got some shapes and dimension which I wanted.... The silver tubes are done by 'couching'... putting thicker yarn through a special couching foot on the machine .
I started working on reindeer for a table runner a couple of weeks ago and there is progress. I was silly and stuck the applique on the right side of the fabric for one and the wrong side for one - you can see the difference in the picture though it doesn't show it as well as it is in real.
Anyway - I didn't want to make a new one and throw the other one out (I had done some stitching!!) so I made two new ones, one right and one wrong and so there is a heaaaaaapppppp of sewing to do now I have two sets!!! Getting there slowly and last night I satin stitched holly berries
Righto, Gotto Go... fire needs rebuilding (no I won't do that but some people should be supervised), coffee needs to be made and sewing machine turned on....
Wow!!! Now THAT'S a post!!!!! LUV everything you're doing (even the extra "wrongs", yup!!! LOL!!)!!! Stay warm, dry and busy!!!! Warm hugs................

Good to have you joining us - your blocks are looking really good...and I love teh clips.
ReplyDeleteSylvia's Sampler is looking gorgeous! There's also a table runner on the go in my sewing room but it's all pieced - no applique. I'm joining you in a coffee, I've just sat down at the computer with mine......and our fire is going, too!
ReplyDeleteBoy! You have been busy. It has been the perfect weather for sewing.
ReplyDeleteI was once told there wasn't a wrong side to fabric, fabric has two sides and you can use either :) Have a great sewing week
ReplyDeleteIt is good to learn new skills with a challenge like that. Even if you don't quite like the piece, you have learned new things for other projects :) Oh and that reindeer is very cute :) xxx
ReplyDeleteYou have been busy! The Sylvia B quilt is going to be great.
ReplyDeleteA very productive weekend of sewing. Well done.
ReplyDeleteLove it all 💖
ReplyDeleteamazing work on your Helen Godden challenge there Fiona... lucky you have someone to do the fire for your home, I always did EVERYTHING for ours when we had one, it drove me mad, we don't have it any more but I do miss the style of heat it gives.
ReplyDeleteWow beautiful , very productive. I had so much fun stitching with you at Chooky's
ReplyDeleteYou have been very busy this weekend. Loving the Sylvia Sampler, lots of work but great results!!! Well done on the challenge, and as for the fabric, well it is your design touch!!
ReplyDeleteyou got lots of sewing work done......Sylvia is looking great........love the setting you are choosing........
ReplyDeleteYou certainly took advantage of staying indoors. Great progress on the sampler blocks and i do like the way you have taken on a new challenge.
ReplyDeleteGood solution to the table runner, too.
Oh golly those blocks - that is just going to be stunning, Fiona, any ideas on how you'll quilt it? I know it will be marvelous...I really like your abstract art piece, the couching is fantastic. I've never used that on my machine, lol. Never used a LOT on my machine. Laughing about getting a moose wrong way round - how many times have I done that! Probably as many times as I got them right.
ReplyDeleteYour Sylvia's Sampler blocks look great with the sashing... I like that you are keeping it the same colour as your backgrounds. Very cool little arty quilt, you sure are stretching yourself and trying new skills :-) Creative solution to your tablerunner 'problem'! (And good to hear you didn't have toooo much rain.)
ReplyDeleteSylvia's Sampler is coming along beautifully.
ReplyDeleteThose sampler blocks look fabulous all together. The art quilting looks like lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteThat coaching looks interesting... I would like to do it as a background.. We will see if ever I try
ReplyDeleteYou will soon have those 34 blocks done! Great clips, what a brilliant idea. Your quilted piece looks very interesting - I like the couched threads over the surface. Do you know that you can use your couching foot to make beautiful cords? Great party at the Chookshed. xx
ReplyDeleteVery productive weekend Fiona. Am loving you sampler blocks. Beautiful quilting as always
ReplyDeleteI like to be early to parties also.

Wow! Fiona your Sylvias Sampler is stunning! Obviously you worked a hard shift at the party to get all that sashing done. Good on you doing something that takes you out of your comfort zone. I really like what you did with your art piece. Well done you! I'm still trying to figure out which fabric is 'wrong' on your Reindeer runner... it looks good to me. Hope it rains again soon so you can work on more lovely projects..... xxxxx
