I think we all have our favourite rulers ...
.... and then there are those different sizes that we wish we had .....
These are some rather gorgeous colours I have been sewing with
the main blocks were all made up but they needed to be cut at an angle
A favourite ruler of mine is the 12 1/2" square but in this case I needed 9 1/2" ..... I am always worried about cutting wrong and it is a pain having to check, double check, triple check......
so I mark my ruler to the size using thin masking tape....
this makes it really easy to quickly see that I am in the right place for cutting....
... much easier to see against the blocks....
.... and here they are ... all trimmed ready for sewing together....
Being one of those people who doesn't like wasted fabric I am very pleased that most of what I have trimmed off has been usable for the applique in the borders.....
How about you? What's your don't want to be without ruler?
This evening I'm going to sew with friends from all over
This evening I'm going to sew with friends from all over
Righto, Gotto Go.... I want to do some tracing for stitching tonight ....
I have three that I use all the time. My 12.5" square, 12.5" x 6.5" and 24" x 6.5". They do have a few other friends but these are the most used. I had a new ruler come in the mail today :o) "Hex N More" She looks a little scary at the moment! see you tonight. Hugs
ReplyDeleteI mostly use a 12.5" x 4.5" and an 8.5" square...I really should get into the habit of using that tape...more than once I've cut 1/4" short because I forget whether I should be looking at the solid or dashed line!
ReplyDeleteYes i to have three favourite rulers, but i seem to be wearing the lines off in places but still can not bear to replace my dear friends. Recently i bought some Westalee rules so really should break them in soon. Great idea with tape especially with my failing eyesight, thanks Fiona. See ya tonight.
ReplyDeleteA very smart idea, because we can't have one of every ruler we want.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea... Clever girl. You may convince me to do some piecing yet. Look forward to stitching with you tonight.
ReplyDeleteHugs xx
clever you!
ReplyDeletethe blocks look lovely, am interested to see what the scraps have become on the borders.
Great idea! I love my 12.5" ruler as well. I'm looking forward to seeing your border now!
ReplyDeleteThat is a hard question, I don't think I have a favorite...love your quilt!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks great, I have two rulers I use most of the time, but love my 12 inch square one to check the blocks before sending them off.
ReplyDeleteI think my favourite one is the 18' ruler! Happy Sewing tonight Fiona xo
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea, as yet I only have one ruler which i bought last week, but I am loving it. That quilt is really pretty too.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's going to be a lovely quilt. I use my 61/2" square one the most, closely followed by the long 61/2" one
ReplyDeleteGreat tip Fiona, I think we have all made that mistake at one time or another. My newest ruler is 8 1/2" square and I love it.
ReplyDeleteThey look amazing! I have a 6.5" square and a 40cm long one. I would love a long one in inches and maybe a 12.5" one too.
ReplyDeleteLove the blocks. Good ruler tip.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing with tape and it worked great! I love your wonky blocks! :0)
ReplyDeleteThe trimmed blocks make a much more interesting design. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, don't think I do enough patchwork to have a favorite ruler
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea Fiona and I love your skewy blocks. My favourite ruler just got broke! so am planning to replace it when I visit UK next week - it is a 6 1/2" x 18 1/2". Have various squares but the one I use least is the triangular one.
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are beautiful, love the colours. Thanks for the tip! Hugs Wendy
ReplyDeletelovely fabrics in your blocks. Good tip using the tape on your ruler. It is so easy to get distracted and cut on the wrong line.
