I took a break from quilting to have a machine sewing day with a friend..... it's almost like a retreat day for us both!!!
First project box was my strippy blocks made with scrap batiks (plus a bit extra I purchased to get some other colours in)
I need to trim back the mess now but I will end up with 25 x 12 1/2" inch blocks....
There still seems to be a pile of strips left... maybe there will be more place-mats made!!!!
Talking of place-mats these one's are now bound and ready for use..... I do like hand sewing binding down generally but for something like this I have done it by machine... they will get a lot of heavy use....
I am doing Gail Pan's BOM called Wish you Well this year and though I have had the hand work done for a little while the blocks needed putting together....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They were all laid out, I needed to find a little bit extra lace etc to include but I was able to sew these blocks together yesterday while the machine was out....
This is January and February.....
... and this is March and April....
I really love making quilts like this with a bit of embroidery, a bit of applique, some lace and piecing...
I need to trace out May and June and make a start on them..... and I need to go hunting for bits of old lace and doilies etc ... not so easy to find as it once was ...
Righto, Gotto Go.... a new day to play.....
I hope you have a lovely rest of the week...
Nice to have a "me" day. Love the Bali string blocks - always such vibrant colours. I really enjoy making those scrappy blocks.
ReplyDeleteThe Gail Pan project is lovely too ...probably need the Op shops to open up again...
Glad to hear you were able to sew with a friend. (Lucky you!) I am now looking forward to see this Batik string quilt take shape. Love your embroidery and to see those beautiful pieces with lace and patchwork is just a little piece of paradise for the eyes. Did you bought the kit or do the pieces of fabric all come from your bins? I love how they play together. Enjoy your new day of play! ;^)
ReplyDeleteLove love love those batiks......played with mine for a while, but I have a f project or two percolating in my head......your embroidered lacey blocks are lovely. Op shops are always good sources to find odds and ends of lace.
Your batiks look gorgeous all piled up like that. The Wish you Well blocks are so pretty - going to be a great quilt. xx
ReplyDeleteSo nice to spend the time with a friend - real time. I'm interested to see what you do with the strip-y blocks. Your placemats are really pretty - I'd be too scared to use - and spill on - them!! Your GailPan BOM is gorgeous - I agree, projects that involve multiple techniques keep me really excited too.
ReplyDeleteYour strippy string blocks look great! Do you sew them on a foundation? I've been using paper lately for mine and like it better than fabric. Tearing off all the bits of paper is very therapeutic :)
ReplyDeleteGosh I always love everything you are working on Fiona. That BOM quilt is looking so beautiful - I love the inclusion of the bits of lace & embroidery - just perfect!
ReplyDeleteLove the blocks you’ve done for Gail’s Blom! And the batik blocks are so bright and pretty! How lovely to be able to spend time with a real friend in real life.. we took it for granted before, now it is a treat! xx
ReplyDeleteHow nice to have a sewing day with a friend. Love those strippy batik blocks.
ReplyDeleteYour BOM quilt is looking so lovely with all those stitcheries, lace and other bits and bobs. I was tempted to do it but talked myself out of it as I have so many projects yet to finish. Looks like you have been extremely productive.
